What Are the Differences Between the 2019 Toyota Prius and 2018 Toyota Prius?

A key change to the Toyota Prius platform in this 2019 Toyota Prius vs 2018 Toyota Prius comparison is a simplified model lineup that will make your decision much simpler. With the debut of the latest Toyota Prius, car shoppers will have a choice of four trim levels – L Eco, LE, XLE and Limited. Previous Toyota Prius entries were available in seven trim levels -- Prius One, Prius Two, Prius Two Eco, Prius Three, Prius Three Touring, Prius Four and Prius Four Touring -- that may have confused many car shoppers.

Performance is another aspect of the iconic Toyota Prius that gets an upgrade with the release of the latest edition. With the addition of an electric AWD-e system, the 2019 Toyota Prius is more capable than its predecessor in regions where snow and inclement weather are common. The innovative AWD-e system is available in two trim levels – LE AWD-e and XLE AWD-e – that are expected to earn 52 mpg in the city and 48 mpg on the highway. Prius AWD-e employs an independent electric rear motor that will power the wheels at speeds below 6 mph to improve acceleration and as needed at speeds up to 43 mph. Armed with the AWD-e system, the all-wheel drive Toyota Prius is expected to be the most efficient all-wheel drive passenger car in the United States.

Under the hood, the 2019 Toyota Prius and 2018 Toyota Prius employ the same fuel-efficient power core that has made the Toyota hybrid a fan favorite. A 1.8-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine paired with a high-torque electric motor will manufacture 121 total horsepower. Married to an Electronic Continuously Variable Transmission, the Toyota Prius will earn 54 mpg in the city and 50 mpg on the highway in LE, XLE and Limited trim levels. When you opt for the ultra-efficient Prius L Eco, you will enjoy 58 mpg in the city and 53 mpg on the highway.

A highlight of the Toyota Prius spec sheet is standard Toyota Safety Sense™ collision-prevention technology that will feature a Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Automatic High Beams, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control and a rearview camera. Inside the Toyota Prius cabin, you will find a 6.1-inch Toyota Entune™ touchscreen infotainment system that provides one-touch access to Bluetooth capabilities and can be upgraded with Integrated Navigation and a JBL® sound system.
