When and Where Can You Ice Fish in Maine?

Maine fishermen who love to hit the ice in the winter can fish in the South Zone from January 1 to December 31 in select counties when ice conditions permit on lakes and ponds. Counties in the South Zone where ice fishing is legal include York County, Cumberland County, Androscoggin County, Kennebec County, Sagadahoc County, Lincoln County, Waldo County, Knox County, Hancock County, Washington County, Oxford County South of the Androscoggin River and Penobscot County South of Route 11 and Route 157. WHERE: Penobscot County – Orono ME

Located in the heart of Penobscot County to the North of Brewer and Bangor, Pushaw Lake may be the perfect place to enjoy a day of fishing on the ice this season. More than 5,000 acres in size, Pushaw Lake reaches depths of 28 feet and is a great place to fish for warm water fish species that include Smallmouth Bass, White Perch, Pickerel, Yellow Perch and Sunfish.

WHERE: Cumberland County – Portland ME

At 45 square miles in size and with depths up to 316 feet, Sebago Lake in Cumberland County is the second largest and the deepest lake in Maine. The host of the annual Sebago Lake Ice Fishing Derby in February, Sebago Lake is a fisherman’s paradise with an abundance of Salmon, Lake Trout, Brown Trout, Smallmouth Bass, Largemouth Bass, Perch, Black Crappie, Pickerel and more.
