Downeast Rental: What you need to know to get in and out fast

Whether you’re renting a car for a fun weekend getaway or just while your vehicle is in the shop, we want your experience renting from Downeast to be hassle free.  Here’s a quick look at what you need to rent with us, and what to expect so you can get in and out fast.

Age Requirements-Renters must be 25 years or older to secure a retail rental.  To rent for insurance replacement vehicles, or as a Downeast Service and Downeast Auto Body customer, renters must be 21 years or older.  Additional drivers on rental agreements must be 21 years of age or older as well, with the primary driver being 25 years or older.

A Valid Driver’s License– You must bring in your actual driver’s license when you come to arrange a rental agreement. We will not accept an expired driver’s license, a photocopy, email, or fax copy of your license.

Insurance– Most rental companies sell insurance to you to cover your rental. Depending on what insurances you opt into, it can get pretty expensive by the time you get your rental car. Downeast Rental does not sell you rental insurance. Instead, we require our renters to have full coverage insurance on their personal vehicle in order to rent with us. When we say ‘full coverage insurance on your personal vehicle,’ we mean that you have collision, comprehensive, and liability insurance on your personal vehicle.

Proof of Insurance– We need to see your insurance card to move forward with a rental agreement.

Credit Card- Your card must have an available credit line sufficient to cover your rental cost, plus a minimum of a $200.00 authorized deposit. You cannot use another person’s credit card to secure a rental; however, if the cardholder is present at the time of return, we may use their credit card for the final payment as long as proper identification is presented.

Debit Cards- If you wish to pay by debit card, you must prequalify. Please contact our office at 866-613-8737 for more information on how to qualify for a rental using your debit card.

Sales Tax– We don’t want this to surprise you! In Maine, there is a 10% sales tax on renting vehicles. It is considered a luxury, even when you are renting because of an accident.

Acceptable Forms of Payment: A major credit card or a debit card in your name, must be presented at the time of rental. You can pay cash, personal check, credit or debit card at the time of return.

Weekend Specials– We offer lower rates for rentals during the weekend, Friday afternoon until Monday morning.

Additional Drivers– At Downeast rental there is no additional charge for additional drivers: however, they must qualify just like the renter. They must carry full coverage insurance on their personal vehicle and have a valid driver’s license.

Mileage Restrictions– We offer unlimited miles in New England (New England being the states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rohde Island and Connecticut).

Towing– Most rental companies don’t allow towing. Downeast Rental does for a $50.00 fee for each rental agreement.

Finally, no smoking please. All of our rentals are nonsmoking. If signs of smoking are found, we do charge a minimum of a $200.00 smoke removal fee.
