1. Your Foot is Not Firmly on the Brake Pedal

When equipped with push-button start, you will need to press the brake pedal at the same time that you push the START button. Make sure that you have your foot pressed firmly on the brake pedal when you attempt to start your Toyota.

2. You Forgot Your Key

This may seem obvious – but did you forget your key? Check your pocket, it happens to the best of us. Double check that you did not leave your Toyota key fob in the house. When this happens to you, you will see a – Key Not Detected – message on the Toyota Multi-Information Display.

3. Weak Key Fob Battery

When the battery gets low in the Toyota Smart Key® key fob, it may not have the power you need to start the car. If you think this is the issue – put your foot on the brake, hold the key fob close to the START button and try again. Learn how to replace the Toyota key fob battery with this quick how-to guide.

4. Weak Car Battery

The problem may not be with you or your key. If you cannot start your Toyota, it may indicate that the vehicle’s battery has a low charge. To resolve this problem – contact the Downeast Toyota Service Department to schedule an appointment and replace your battery.

5. You Deactivated the Toyota Smart Key®

Another reason that push-button start won’t work may be that you deactivated the Toyota Smart Key® system by mistake. The switch to activate and deactivate the key fob is located below the steering wheel at the bottom of the instrument panel.
