“ TL;DR: It’s worth driving a little farther to another Toyota dealership. I visited Down East Toyota to explore either purchasing my current lease or starting a new lease. In the days leading up to my visit, I spoke with both Sales Support Specialist Dylan Mountain and Finance & Insurance Manager Brianna C. From the start, I was very clear about what I wanted to accomplish. Unfortunately, it quickly became apparent that there was poor communication between staff, as I was repeatedly asked for information we had already discussed. I also felt pressured to come into the dealership because I was told they “prioritize customers in the dealership over people on the phone.” Once I arrived, I worked with Sales Representative Chris Vafiades, who was professional, helpful, and by far the highlight of the experience. Chris made the process of discussing a new lease feel straightforward and was a steady, respectful presence throughout. That said, the overall experience declined significantly once management became more involved. I understand this took place on a Friday evening and that the sales team stayed after hours to finish the deal, and I appreciate that effort. However, it was made very clear to us that our presence was viewed as an inconvenience. During negotiations, Sales Manager John Cuskelly repeatedly commented that we were “taking away Chris’s livelihood” and “eating into his commission.” Those remarks were inappropriate and uncomfortable. As customers simply trying to negotiate a vehicle deal, we should not have been made to feel guilty for asking questions or discussing price. It also reflected poorly on management’s support of their own sales representative. In addition, Brianna C. displayed visible frustration during the conversation, including eye-rolling and sighing, which only added to the negative atmosphere. For anyone considering doing business with Down East Toyota, here are my honest takeaways from this experience: - Be cautious with trade-in or lease-end valuations - in our experience, the numbers felt lower than expected while being presented as though they were generous. - Expect resistance if you negotiate - we were made to feel guilty simply for trying to discuss pricing. - If you do decide to shop here, I strongly recommend getting quotes and offers from other Toyota dealerships in the area first so you have a clearer sense of your leverage. Because of this experience, we will not be returning to Down East Toyota for future vehicle purchases or leases. Chris Vafiades was the one bright spot, but overall the dealership’s management and customer experience left a lot to be desired. ”

The last two times my wife and I went in we had one guy tell us we probably couldn’t afford to buy what we were looking for without doing any paperwork or credit checks. The other insulted us with his ridiculously low offer on our paid off trade in. Which wasn’t really smart on a self employed individual that buys vehicles every 2-3 years. This was our starting place we typically find or try to find the best deal. I’ve owned over 9 Toyotas in my life and only bought one here. My wife immediately went online and found one 2k cheaper and they gave us what we were hoping for on a trade in! We will not give them another chance. We will make the drive further to avoid this kind of salesmanship and condescending treatment. ”

They did unauthorized work, messed up instructions and did other minor, irritating things that show that they weren't serious about customer service. ”
